【お酒をやめる】依存症危険度チェックとお酒をやめる方法(Quitting Alcohol

[00:00]

Well, one of the causes of cancers, acetaldehyde. And one more. That’s what I said, a diuretic effect. You dry out. Anyway, do you know how serious it is if you dry out?

“A human is composed of water.” It used to be an ad copy. “A human is composed of water.” Some tens of percent of the human body are composed of water. If the water is lost and the thickness increases, what’s the problem? Of course, blood! Blood vessels. In other words, myocardial infarction, cerebral infarction, and other various risks for blood vessels increase. And the Japanese people’s major causes of death are cancer and these clogs of blood vessels of the circulatory system. Myocardial infarction and cerebral infarction.

So, the reason why the WHO says to stop drinking and to enlighten people about it is that drinking is likely to cause cancers and vascular diseases. One cause is acetaldehyde and the other is the diuretic effect. Health is completely destroyed by these two. And what about the defense while the attack is going on? Sleep is being destroyed. That’s right.

First, by destroying sleep, it destroys the castle of defense.  The Wall-Maria of “Attack on Titan.” The Wall-Maria is only 20 cm now. Wow! That’s sooooo low. Just a little step. Wall-Maria, Wall-Rose 20 cm, 30 cm. Lowering first, then attacking hard. Acetaldehyde and the diuretic effect make the three major death causes of cancers and circulatory system diseases. The defense is destroyed and attack is enhanced. It’s terrible.

[ Part 3: Danger Level Check]

Now that you’ve watched this far, you understand.

“But I’m still fine, right? It’s still okay for me to drink.” You may think so. That’s why we need a danger level check.

[2:00]

How bad is it?

“It’s okay, don’t surprise me like that, Nakata. I was looking forward to Youtube NAKATA University, but today it’s like a horror movie. What’s up with that? Why? Everyday I watch your videos with a beer in my hand. Why are you taking away my fun?” It sounds like this.

Now, let’s look at the danger level. I’m saying this for myself, too. I also love it, that’s why I’m telling you this. The danger level check. Let’s start with looking at the levels.

[2:33]

The first level is “I usually don’t drink”. For example, once or twice a month. If there’s a party, sometimes there will be alcohol. So, I guess I’ll have a drink.

People who drink like this, please raise your hand. Hummm. Yes.

That’s called occasional drinking. They drink if they have the opportunity, or chance. “If I have the opportunity…” “In the next chance, please.” or so. Occasional drinkers are very light drinkers. That’s completely okay.

The next level is “If there is a chance, no, I often drink. I habitually drink about 3-4 times a week.” Or, “I have a drink with dinner every evening, but it’s not that much.”

Every evening with dinner, or about 3-4 times a week. If this is you, please raise your hand. This is called habitual drinking.

[3:42]

The last level is alcoholism. This is a sickness. I don’t know if people at this level can raise their hand. Or if they’re in the condition to watch this video.

The truth is they can watch this video. Everyone, this is what you have to be careful about. Speaking of alcoholism, you’re thinking that this is your condition, right? Wrong! Shaking and intoxication are not the only conditions of alcoholism.

Actually, there are people who work normally and finish their work without any trouble but are actually alcoholic. There are many such people in society. These are the scary things you all don’t know about. “Whaaaaaaat?”

That’s why, the boundaries between levels 2 and 3 are more vague than you think. That’s the scariest thing.

Even with alcoholism, there are people who are able to work normally. However, there is already a big risk to their health. Those are alcoholic people. Also, people who habitually drink every day for an evening drink. It means the gradation of those people’s borders is very smooth. So, in this book, habitual drinkers are called ‘alcoholism reserve forces’. It’s frightening, isn’t it? Basically, it isn’t wrong to say people who occasionally or regularly drink qualitatively alcoholic drinks are heading towards alcohol dependency. It’s just a matter of time before they become alcohol dependent. It’s a problem that accelerates with age.

Actually, the most frightening thing about the drug known as alcohol is that the time you start drinking alcohol until you become alcohol dependent is a fairly long time. People that get arrested for what we would call stimulant drugs or illegal drugs, people who become problems; many of those people who have an addiction seem to be in their 20s or 30s.

[5:57]

However, the most alcoholic dependent age group is surprisingly people between their 40s and 60s. Basically, it happens fast. You get addicted to those stimulants and have an addiction. However, you start drinking from around 20 years old and after a 20-year delay, in your 40s you will suddenly develop alcohol dependency. There are many people who experience this. Many viewers watching this video on Youtube University are in their 20s, 30s and early 40s. On YouTube University, there are many viewers around those age groups.

That’s why I want to tell you. Now is the time to quit. Now is the time to stop. Continuing would be falling off a cliff. You can turn back before you fall. You can’t turn back once you fall.

[6:48]

Once you realize that you have cirrhosis, your liver is no longer usable, or you have cancer. There is a big difference between turning back before it happens and turning back after it happens. So, this is the video to save such people as in the so-called “gray area” between alcoholism and habitual drinking. If you think this video doesn’t matter because you are an occasional drinker or a complete addict, it might be better if you watch different videos. But watching this video from when you are just an occasional drinker is very meaningful. Rather, it’s better to show this video even to people who don’t drink. It’s actually much better to know this information from childhood. I’ll discuss this in the last part of the video, but the most important way to improve in regards to alcoholism isn’t treatment but education. And you need to have the correct atmosphere. This is what the author says. That means spreading the knowledge about the dangers of alcoholism.

It’s not what you had in mind, is it?

[7:58]

You thought alcoholism was like this, intoxicated and dizzy, didn’t you?

You didn’t imagine there was such a thing as someone who goes to work, comes home, and is an addict. There are other points that go against that stereotype. Personality.

“Alcoholics are usually wild people, right? They always drink too much, right?”

“Idiot! If you work, you’ll lose. Drinking from noon is the way to go.” They say so and drink a lot. That’s the stereotype?

No, no, no. These are the personality types who are at risk of becoming alcoholics.

The stubborn type, the perfectionists, the honor-student type, and the enthusiastic type. “Oh, no! That’s ME! Some people think for themselves. Right?

“I’m stubborn.” Hardheaded people are the type who don’t listen to the advice of others and trust their own judgement and ideas.

“You drink way too much.” “You really need to take it easy on the booze.” Then, “It’s alright.. I love drinking, so I’m gonna drink.” They’re set on drinking and aren’t going to give it up.

[9:03]

The Perfectionist. In reality, perfectionists have a lot of stress. They work hard because they want everything to be perfect. They also worry about mistakes others might make. As you can imagine, perfectionists can easily get stressed out. That stress is what can drive some perfectionists to drink, as an escape.

How about the honor student type? You know why you can be a good person and an honor student, because you care, right? But because they are kind hearted, they often bite their tongues and don’t say what’s really on their minds. This is what puts the kind hearted type under lots of stress. So, they turn to alcohol.

On top of that, the enthusiastic person who really gets into something, will concentrate on one thing after drinking. For example, if you draw a picture, you only draw pictures. If this type goes in a bad direction, it’s bad. When they drink, they think only about drinking. They go that way.

So, it’s not a hermit or a goof, as you may have thought. Alcoholism is common among people who are stubborn, perfectionists, good hearted and enthusiastic personalities. It’s actually people who are highly proficient and can put their energy and skills to a positive use. That’s frightening, isn’t it? So let’s be careful.

[10:18]

Danger Level Signs

“Then… huh? I’m habitually drinking, pretty stubborn, and a perfectionist. That’s scary.”

If you thought that, here’s this: The signs. The danger level signs, please remember these. It’s dangerous if you become like this. So, please quit quickly.

[10:29]

The signs. That is, if you want to drink in the daytime. It’s here! You’re drinking in the daytime. It’s said that drinking beer in the daytime is a luxury. There are times when you feel that way. But you think that’s a nice feeling.

[10:55]

“Because of COVID19, recently we’re staying at home often. Work isn’t going well, so there’s nothing to do. Drinking beer in the daytime is a luxury. At first, I started drinking. Since then, it’s becoming a habit. I’m drinking every afternoon. Yeah… I hope COVID19 clears up soon.”

[11:12]

This is dangerous. Rather than noon, of course drinking in the morning is more dangerous. From the moment you wake up in the morning, you want to drink. If you become like this, it’s dramatically dangerous. Please be careful about this. You may be an alcoholic. You’re on your way to becoming alcohol dependent.

[11:30]

In addition, “Don’t drink alcohol? Go a day without drinking alcohol? Nakata! Then , there’s nothing to do.” If you say so, this is what I’m talking about. Feeling like you have nothing to do the whole day. “If you tell me to please quit alcohol, then I have nothing to do the whole day”. You, who are thinking this, are dangerous. Dangerous.

[11:55]

Actually, there are things that bring joy other than alcohol. Although, people with alcohol dependency are alcohol dependent, and they are unaware of it. They are unconsciously dependent on alcohol, so they think alcohol is their joy in life. They are close to being half brainwashed thinking this.

[12:15]

In the past, I used to smoke tobacco. I said that. At the moment when I decided to quit smoking. When I got married, my wife told me, “Our child will be born soon, so please stop smoking tobacco!” she said. And I said, “I’ll quit! Don’t say it like I’m a deadbeat father who doesn’t think about his family. I am a great father that can think about my family.” I thought, “I don’t want to quit!”, however I had no choice but to quit. I said it to sound cool, so I quit. I was able to quit.

But when I quit, I thought “If I stop smoking, I will lose one of the things I enjoy.”

“What should I do, on the contrary, at that time? The free time I had when I went to the smoking area. There’s nothing to do!”

There isn’t nothing to do. You know that when you quit. There’s maaaaaany things to do! There’s maaaaaany fun things to do! There’s only fun things to do! On the contrary, tobacco isn’t fun. Now if I go to a restaurant that isn’t separated between smoking and non-smoking seats, I won’t have a very happy face. I would say, “Give me a break! It’s a terrible smell!” People that stay inside aren’t realizing this.

[13:28]
The second point is a feeling of loss as well as a feeling bored. It’s a feeling of loss. “If I lose alcohol, I have nothing to look forward to!”

“Please stop drinking.” “Okay. Sure!” That’s great. People like that are usually occasional drinkers.

For a habitual drinker, it’s kind of annoying when they’re told to stop drinking. “Hey, don’t steal my happiness!” they think. It’s the body which is made to say so. Why? Please look at the whiteboard below. Dopamine is the cause. Here it is. Here it comes, the pleasure chemical in the brain, dopamine. Here it comes. This is an essential line when talking about the human body. Dopamine itself is innocent. Dopamine is like “Wow! I’m so happy!” That kind of chemical. “Yea! This feels great! Awesome! So much fun!” That’s the stuff. It is a chemical in the brain. However, this takes some time to get. When is it released? I studied hard for the test and aced it. “Wow!” Dopamine. I passed the exam. “Wow!” Dopamine. I practiced soccer hard and scored a goal. “Wow!” Dopamine. So, dopamine is released when we experience success. If you don’t work hard for it, you won’t be able to enjoy your successes so much. If you get 100% on a test by cheating, you won’t get the dopamine rush, will you?

You got lucky and got a goal even though you didn’t even practice. You’re in a game, you get hit with a ball, and you get a goal saying, “Did I score a goal?” You don’t get the dopamine release.

He worked really hard for three years. That’s Kogure-kun. They said, “He’s a member of Shohoku too!” For three years, there was no game, and then when it came down to it, Kogure-kun scored the winning goal, right? That’s why Kogure-kun’s dopamine was so strong at that time. He had worked so hard. “This is what dopamine feels like, Kogure-kun.” “Akagi~” he said, already in an incredibly happy state. That’s how hard it is to get.

[15:30]

But, you know, it’s easy to get that feeling from medicine. That’s right. It makes it so easy for you that you can’t stop. But it’s an illusory pleasure, isn’t it? You can get it. Have you ever heard this story? Remember, we were talking about when we talked about autophagy, right?

Not only does alcohol give you a dopamine rush, but sugar does as well. It’s the same with sugar. If you have some sugar, you’ll get dopamine. So when you eat something sweet… “Yeah!” Right? “Reward myself today! Sugar yay!” That’s dopamine! It’s easy to get it. It’s better to get dopamine, isn’t it? It’s not expensive either – sugar and alcohol. It’s cheap. It doesn’t even cost ¥1,000. And you get your dopamine fix. So you buy it! That’s why you can’t stop eating sweets and drinking alcohol.

[16:33]

Do you know what is said to be dramatically dangerous now? It’s strong chuhai, distilled spirit soda. Strong chuhai has a very high alcohol content. On top of that, it is cheap, isn’t it? Do you know why it is so cheap? Is it a carefully made drink? It’s actually ethyl alcohol with artificial sweeteners added. It is so dangerous that some people say it should be regulated. The strong chuhai is a high dopamine bazooka, because you can get a very strong percentage of alcohol at a very low price. The dopamine comes out like a bazooka, so it’s hard to stop. That’s why you can get strong chuhai and very sweet sweets at convenience stores 24 hours a day, and you can buy strong chuhai and sweets for 1,000 yen. That’s why it’s dangerous. That’s why it’s dangerous.

But this is not about your will, it’s about the knowledge that there are highly addictive things like sugar and alcohol here, and that dopamine is being released. If you have this knowledge, it becomes a shield. So, please listen to me.

And the signs. If you feel a sense of loss, it’s bad. Plus, when you start to feel guilty, it’s time to go. After a drink, you say, “I drank again. Oh no!”

[18:06]

Do you know why it’s bad when you start to feel guilty? In other words, you know it in your mind, you know it in your rational mind, but your body is still drinking. In other words, the drug is taking you into a state of complete uncontrolled behaviour. That’s why it’s so scary. “I know, but I can’t stop.” This was a popular light-hearted song for a while. It was ages ago. That is a dramatically dangerous situation. If you are feeling guilty and you know you can’t stop, then your body is already out of control. Your brain isn’t controlling you, but you’re actually a slave to dopamine. It’s horrible. When that happens, you must fix it.

So what do you think, folks? Are you a habitual drinker? On top of that, are you stubborn, a perfectionist, a model student, or enthusiastic? Then, haven’t you ever thought, “I’d like to drink in the afternoon?

Have you ever thought, “If I don’t drink, I’d be free during the COVID19’s restriction period? So I guess I’d have a drink?”

If you are told not to drink, don’t you feel something lost? “Don’t steal my joy, don’t take away something so important in my life…”, saying that it is important, do you defend alcohol?

In addition, do you feel a little guilty after drinking? After drinking or when you wake up in the middle of the night or in the morning, do you wonder why you drank? You say, “I won’t drink today,” or “I’ll take a day off from drinking,” but you end up drinking at night. Do you spend your day like that? If so, please listen to what follows.

[19:40]

How to quit. So, here’s how to quit. It’s simple. Number 1: “Declare to quit” Simple, isn’t it? But surely that was when I quit smoking. I thought, “Oh, I’ll quit! Don’t think I’m a husband who can’t quit smoking! I’m going to quit smoking here, so that our future children won’t be ashamed of me!”

I said that when we were newlyweds. I declared it.

What’s good about this is that it makes it easier to say NO afterwards. If you tell the people around you. That’s because they are alcoholic buddies. They say,

“Hey, hey, don’t stop. Hey, Kaiji, why are you going out of the basement? Why don’t you work in the basement, earn some perikas, and have a beer with fried chicken? Why are you leaving the underground? It’s so lonely.”

They feel like they’ve been left behind. That’s why when you say that you quit smoking, there are people who urge you not to quit smoking, but when you clearly say, “I’m quitting!” it’s easy to decline the person who invites you.

It could be the worst if you try to quit secretly. Why? Because it would be a lonely battle. It would be hard to decline, wouldn’t it?

[21:02]

“There’s a drinking party! It’s a drinking party! Let’s drink a lot! Hey, what’s with the long face? Why did you ask for sparkling water? That’s not what we want! Obviously, we want to drink beer first! I already ordered your beer for you! Let’s start off with a beer!”

[21:16]

If this happens, you should say,

“No! I quit alcohol! My doctor is already telling me to stop! Situations like this are why I want to quit!” If you have declared, someone says,

“No, no, he’s fine with sparkling water. You quit, right? Good luck!”

If you tell them you quit, it’s easier to refuse alcohol and you will have friends that support you. Not only people that say, “This person’s quitting,” there will also be people that say, “I’m also trying to quit.”

[21:47]

Now there are lots of SNS, right? There are communities, right? In those places, if you say “I’m thinking about quitting,” other people will tell you “I’m also thinking about quitting” and you can give encouragement to each other.

[21:57]

Even me, I introduced autophagy, one meal a day. If you’re having trouble, eat nuts. Dinner is okay, but persevere with nuts in the noon, skip breakfast, and don’t eat for 16 hours. When I said, “I’ll do autophagy,” people in my internet community Progress, said “I’ll do it too!” and “I’m also doing it too!”.

Not only communities, but also people in the YouTube comments say, “I’m also intermittent fasting!” “My skin’s beauty has improved!”

You’re supporting each other. If you have friends who don’t drink like non-smokers, you can quit too! Don’t do it alone. Instead of that, declare it. This is a declaration to quit alcohol! “I’ll quit alcohol.”

[22:37]

There’s one more method: Record. Please write.

Let’s write what month and day we quit. Let’s write it. Let’s write about the feelings we have when we go a day without drinking. You will know what I mean if you go just a day without drinking.

You’ll wake up feeling good. Your face won’t be puffy. Your body won’t feel heavy. Your throat won’t feel dry. You’ll be able to sleep well.

[23:03]

If you write that, it becomes a part of yourself. Actually, we said that many alcohol dependent people tend to be stubborn, perfectionists, and model students. It would be good for these people to keep records. You leave a record for yourself. Within yourself you’ll think, “Good things happened when I quit alcohol.” Instead of alcohol, good things will make you feel good. Once you do that, you’ll think, “All right! I’ll wake up feeling great tomorrow too!” Encourage yourself by keeping a record.

[23:35]

Also, the good thing about keeping a record is that it’s clear when you quit. Actually, the toughest time quitting is the first 2 weeks. This is known as the withdrawal period. With alcohol dependency, when you have withdrawals, the first two weeks are the toughest. If you’re able to pass two weeks, praise yourself. “I did well!” “I quit for 2 weeks.” “I slept without drinking!” You can type in such a record! You can write it by hand or input, or even an app is okay! There are three types of methods.

[24:05]

The first method is handwritten notes. The second method is typing on a computer. The third method involves recent apps that help you reduce your drinking. There are apps for recording your reduction of alcohol, so please look up those apps as well.

[24:17]

I have a habit of writing my diary mainly on my computer, that’s how I do it. “I could sleep today”, I’ll write. I’ll record it too.

I’ll also tell my wife, “I’ll quit drinking.”  And I’ll tell my viewers, too. “Atsuhiko Nakata, I’ll make a declaration. Until yesterday’s video, I was making it while drinking. I wasn’t making it while drinking. I wasn’t making it like this while drinking. I was making the video while living the life of a drinker.”

Why? I was going through a lot. There was a quarantine period. When I moved to Singapore I was quarantined for two weeks and I had nothing to do. I was bored.

Even when I thought I should try to do something, I was naturally stressed out. I began drinking. It’ll be delivered if you order it. Services like Uber and Grab are available now. That’s why I started drinking, and the amount I drank increased, so I thought it was awful. You know, at the graduation press conference and in the autophagy video, I looked really sharp. But then I started drinking, and I was getting a little out of shape. I thought I was starting to get dark circles around my eyes. I’ve been making videos every week, so they could also be my health check. When I was at my peak and when I started to fall apart, I thought, “Oh, I’m changing.” So I want to get back on track.

And then my daughter said to me, “Dad, keep looking the way you are.” “I see, you’re making me cry, you’re saying what I want you to say the most right now. A good girl. Okay, I’m gonna get eternal youth. I’m going to be just like Mr. Hirohiko Araki.

“I’m going to be the man who never ages,” I announced to my family. I’m going to quit drinking. In addition, I’m going to declare it to the audience. “Atsuhiko Nakata will also quit drinking, so everyone, if you want to quit drinking now, please look at Nakata’s face. Please watch the video. Please watch and see how I’m gonna be rejuvenated. And please encourage yourselves. Let’s write a diary together. Let’s try our hardest. I’m one of you. I’ll quit saying so. After two weeks, the withdrawal period becomes much easier. What’s next? I heard that in 90 days, the brain completely inputs the habit. It’s a reset. In other words, if you start the habit of drinking, you will be absorbed more and more, but if you don’t drink, a habit of abstaining from alcohol will be completely installed in 90 days. You’ll be out of the hard times in two weeks and installed in 90 days. You have to be patient until then, everyone. It’s true that I thought about smoking for about two weeks after I quit, but after about three months it didn’t bother me anymore. I forgot about it. It wasn’t a matter of endurance, it was a matter of forgetting. People just get used to it. So let’s get used to it in 90 days. Until then. Just keep writing in your diary for 90 days, “I didn’t drink again today, so I woke up feeling great.” That’s all you need to do, isn’t it?

[27:17]

Now, there is an important concept in all of this. Let’s go over it again.

There are two words, “abstinence” and “sobriety”. What do they mean?

In the industry of quitting alcohol, “abstinence” means trying to quit by yourself. “Sobriety” means trying to quit, relying on others. In other words, “sobriety” means, you can join a team of senior members who are talking about how they quit, or you can go to a medical institution for support to quit, or you can do it with the encouragement of others. That’s what sobriety is.

So, it’s good if you can stop drinking alone. But if you do it alone, you’ll usually make some mistakes. That’s why so many have failed, because they’ve been doing it alone.

So, make it known to everyone, record it, and make it public. You can write “It’s been a few days” on social media, or in your diary or on your blog. “Good morning!” You can just tweet, “I didn’t drink yesterday, so I’m waking up, feeling great! Just tweet, It’s totally fine to do that while being encouraged by everyone, so it should be from abstinence to sobriety, please remember that.

[28:20]

In addition, there is one more thing. That’s education and environment. The important thing is knowledge. Basically, alcohol is a drug, and contains about the same amount of dependency as morphine. Moreover, being legal is something that may be only right now. Also, the nation should be securing financial resources within the necessary framework and alcohol was set as barely legal. This knowledge of history is important.

[28:50]

In addition, organizations like WHO and scientists say,

“It destroys your sleep, you will be more vulnerable, damage your DNA, it will clog your arteries, and you will develop cancer or a blood circulatory disease. Not just that, you will also gradually age severely.”

In addition to causing aging and causing a serious illness, it is a drug that allows you to expect these goals.

When checking for that, a habit, personality or a sign, these are the things you cannot overlook.

In addition, if you think about curing it or quitting, first declare it and then record it. Get help from everyone while quitting.

Teaching that kind of knowledge is important.

[29:34]

The most important thing is saying it to the future children who don’t drink yet. If you say this before they start drinking, the rate of drinking will be lower. Even the idea of no smoking’s spread, right? Isn’t the number of young smokers decreasing? That’s right! There’s no more “I can’t do this meeting unless I smoke!”. Only the executives at companies say this. It has become the culture of young employees to not smoke. Alcohol is also becoming like this.

Humanity is taking back their health. There’s not much of that said in the media. The reason is that there’s a lot of capital and many powers that want tax money and sales. And they sponsor alcohol. So we need to say such a thing as a grassroot campaign. In that way, I thought this video might also have meaning.

[30:30]

Finally, the thing I want you to value is the one thing you shouldn’t do to people who drink. That’s to scold them. It’s said that harshly scolding someone is something you should absolutely not do. Instead of scolding, understanding is better. Why? That person isn’t drinking not because they are irresponsible. They are very serious, stubborn, a perfectionist, they get hurt, and stress builds up. That’s why they’re drinking. So if you scold people like this, they will be encouraged to drink and become unnecessarily lonely. That’s why you shouldn’t make them feel this way. You should try to understand why they are hurt. In addition, tell them the correct information nicely.  You can make an increasingly helpful environment. It’s the environment, not the intention. That information is one part of education.

[31:30]

If there’s anyone interested in this video, it’s okay to show them this video and consult with medical institutions. But the important thing is that they’re always accelerating to a cliff and if they fall off the cliff, they can’t redeem themselves. Before you fall, if you can turn back, you can change your habits in 90 days.

[31:58]

However, since you were able to stop drinking, you started again, which in the end, is the same. Because the amount of poison, the amount you can drink in a lifetime, is fixed. So, if you have accumulated so much, you can stop here and turn back, but if you start drinking again, it will keep adding up, so it is up to you where you stop.

I haven’t become seriously ill yet either. My arms aren’t shaking. I can still turn back from here. What about you? Let’s all stop drinking. Did you take my statement to heart? I’ll be reporting on my progress on my YouTube channel, NAKATA University, with four videos a week, so you can see how I look, and whether I’m getting old or not. I want to keep my promise to my daughter. See you again!
