SWIM IN THE CHAOS  ―PROGRESS STORY―

Chapter 1.  Irritation  ~ Seeking Unknown Shores ~

Story 1.  An Ark Adrift Among Angry Waves

Nakata was driven by a sense of crisis.

He felt a kind of enigmatic anxiety and frustration as if a storm of unprecedented size were approaching rapidly.

In 2016, Nakata was blessed by the big hit of a number called “Perfect Human” by the group “Radio Fish.” Although he had barely believed in the future of “TV and entertainment offices” until then, the huge hit of the number ironically made him rethink his vision.

Compared to the size of the hit, his own status and the reward he got seemed too small. The reason was clear. The viewing rate in the whole TV industry had been gradually descending. That was not a crisis limited only to the TV world, however.

In the music industry, some idols stayed the course selling CDs in various ways, but already the era of CDs had nearly capsized. The situation was similar in the publishing industry, and the number of people who went to the trouble of buying physical books or magazines had been decreasing as quickly as the number of bookstores.

It was smartphones that drove out all of them. Everyone now possessed the fruit of wisdom. The silhouette of the bitten fruit led these advances.

Instead of TV, now people watch YouTube videos. Instead of CDs, they listen to Apple Music or Spotify. They read novels in the Kindle app and check Instagram instead of magazines. That was the irreversible trend of the times, and the great shift of lifestyle after only tens of years.

The digitalization of work was an urgent task for Nakata. Above all else, “Unless I am on the side of creating my own jobs instead of just receiving ones, my future will no longer exist.” He fully understood that he was not prepared enough to survive on his own.

Nakata had broken out several times by then, experiencing the ups and downs of the industry. He repeatedly basked in the lights and applause then sunk. Far from being stable, popularity cannot be planned. Besides, just like many other entertainers, he was in the position of receiving a job from the office he belonged to. Without any change, he wouldn’t gain any earning ability and his standing would be lost beneath the rising tides.

On the contrary to Nakata, who was feeling such strong anxiety and irritation, none of TV staff, office employees, entertainers around him, or even his partner of manzai, stand-up comedy, hadn’t sensed such sinking feelings yet.

Nakata kept close his feelings of isolation and irritation that no one understood him, and he soberly came to the realization, “I’ll have to have the ability to earn whenever I’m fired.”

Then, without saying anything to his office, Nakata hosted a live show of Oriental Radio on his own. He advertised using social network systems (SNS) and sold the tickets online. He struggled to begin his personal activities, making and selling goods, giving lecture presentations, and so on.

Nakata tried everything he thought of, even though he had nothing special then. That was as if he were trying to make handmade arms through a trial-and-error process to eat all the things he could eat.

There was no other way for him to leave the sinking ground than to set sail for unknown shores. In order to do that, Nakata had to build his very own ship that could endure the foretold tempest. An Ark of his own to survive the coming catastrophe.

Thus, the process of product sales, YouTube video making, and online community building, as well as his own background is told in the “Shikujiri Buyuden” or the Heroic Fiasco Story episode in YouTube Nakata University.

This book is the story of “Online Salon,” the community that Nakata has built online apart from the activities of YouTube Nakata University, Oriental Radio, or the music activities as Radio Fish.
